Zangeres Amina Alaoui (1964) wordt geboren in Fez (Marokko) waar ze ook opgroeide. Als kind hoorde ze de Arab-Andalusische muziek, meegenomen door de Moslims die zich vestigden in de Maghreb, eind 15de eeuw. Spanje werd etnisch ‘gezuiverd’ en de Joden en Moslims vluchtten naar Noord-Afrika en landen rond de Middellandse Zee.
Amina zingt in de Gharnati-stijl die ontstond in Granada, eind 15de eeuw. De Christenen heroverden het Iberische eiland na zeven eeuwen bezetting en de Moslims trokken zich terug in Granada. Uiteindelijk vestigden deze Morisco’s zich in Noord Afrika. (Morisco’s: Moslims die in het Spanje van na 1492 zich tot het Christendom moesten bekeren en constant in de gaten werden gehouden of ze wel ‘goed’ leefden volgens de Christelijke tradities). In Noord-Afrika werd deze Gharnati stijl mondeling overgeleverd en begin 20ste eeuw op papier gezet door Nathan Yafil, die er een twintig-delen-dik boekwerk aan wijdde. Dat zorgde voor een interesse en opleving in de jaren ‘20.
