'The living road' verschilt in veel opzichten van 'La Llorona', het debuutalbum van Lhasa de Sela en haar vaste begeleider Yves Desrocher. Ze is nu meer ingetogen, introvert, laat de muziek zijn werk doen. Elk lied op dit album is een juweel. De arrangementen zijn tot in de kleinste details uitgewerkt maar blijven fris. De teksten zijn pure poëzie. Was haar eerste album helemaal Spaanstalig, nu wisselt ze Spaans af met Engels en Frans. Dat heeft alles te maken met haar persoonlijkheid en met het feit dat ze woont en werkt in Mexico, de VS, Canada en Frankrijk. Hoe groot de verschillen tussen de verschillende composities ook zijn, het album vormt een geheel. Bij deze muziek vliegen er bij wijze van spreken grote vlinders naar binnen. Muziek die iedere keer dat je luistert weer iets nieuws onthult. Een verademing!

She is now more subdued, introverted, let the music do its work. Each song on this album is a gem. The arrangements are worked out in great detail but remain fresh. The lyrics are pure poetry. Was her first album entirely in Spanish, she now alternates Spanish with English and French. It has everything to do with her personality and the fact that she lives and works in Mexico, the USA, Canada and France. How big the differences between the various compositions are, the album is a whole. This music fly so to speak inside large butterflies. Music that every time you listen reveals something new. A relief!

Calle 54 is een openlijke liefdesverklaring aan de Latin Jazz, de muziek die - aldus filmmaker Fernando Trueba - mij van het leven laat genieten zoals niets anders dat kan. Trueba neemt ons mee op een muzikale reis van de Bronx via Cuba naar Brazillie en van Argentinië via Santo Domingo naar Andalusië. Hij laat ons horen hoe deze jazz verhalen vertelt, protesteert, verleidt en bovenal levenslust uitstraalt. De film is een fantastische mix van geluid en beelden, stijlen en ritmes - van samba tot cumbia en flamenco. Trueba zocht de beste latin-jazzer-tiesten thuis op voor een kort portretje en liet ze vervolgens optreden in de Sony Music Studios aan 54th street in New York. (Vandaar de titel van de film: Calle is Spaans voor straat). Hier beschikt men over de allerbeste geluidstechniek. Het resultaat is een swingende muziekfilm, die tegelijk een historisch document is. Calle 54 is an open declaration of love for the Latin Jazz, the music - says filmmaker Fernando Trueba - let me enjoy life as nothing else can. Trueba takes us on a musical journey from the Bronx through Cuba to Brazil and Argentina from Santo Domingo to Andalusia. He let us know how it tells stories about jazz, protest, and above seduces for life radiates. The film is a fantastic mix of sound and images, styles and rhythms - from samba to cumbia and flamenco. Trueba was looking for the best Latin-Jazzer Tiest home for a short portrait and let them occur in the Sony Music Studios on 54th Street in New York. (Hence the title of the film: Calle is Spanish for street). Here we have the best audio technology. The result is a swinging musical film, which is also a historical document. Mariza is half Mozambiquaans, half Portugees. Ze is op haar derde van Mozambique naar Portugal verhuist en belandde daar in Lissabon, in de volkswijk Alfama, die wijk staat ook bekend als de bakermat van de fado.
Op haar laatste cd, ‘Terra’ bezingt Mariza haar wijk, maar deze cd is tevens een stap úit die wijk. Met musici uit Engeland, Cuba, Spanje en Brazilie, omhelst Mariza muzikale invloeden uit alle windstreken. ‘Terra’ heeft nog steeds de wortels stevig verankerd in de fado, maar juist de vleugjes van buitenaf maken dat dit album sprankelt en een aanrader voor iedere fado-liefhebber.
Mariza is half Moz, half Portuguese. She is on her third from Mozambique to Portugal, and ended up moving there in Lisbon, popularly Alfama district, the district is also known as the birthplace of fado.
On her latest CD, "Terra" Mariza sings her ward, but this CD is also a step out of that district. With musicians from England, Cuba, Spain and Brazil, Mariza embraces musical influences from all corners. 'Terra' still has its roots firmly anchored in the fado, but the hints of the outside make this album sparkles and a must for any lover of Fado.
